Shangri-La is a wonderful basin
that hangs of the East Slopes of Mount Wilbur. It has a feeling of
remoteness here that is difficult to attain at other lakes in Many
Glacier area. The route I've always taken is Hike towards Red Rock
lake via the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail. After reaching a footbridge
before the lake a trail turns off the right into the woods. The
trail meanders up through meadows till reaching a large waterfall that
drains the basin. From here it takes a bit of route finding to get
through the cliffs to the basin. Nothing should be more difficult
than Class 3 climbing. Once to the Basin it is easy to hike over
the ridge to the north and descend to Iceberg Lake and make a round trip
hike back to the road. |
